My name is Kubrat Salaam, but most people just call me Kubi (coo•bee). I’m a second year business student at the University of California-Riverside, and the proud owner of an online apparel, accessories and décor shop by the name of Kubitees. With my company I strive to bridge cultural divides in fashion, support independent artists and artisans worldwide, and provide unique products to fashion-forward individuals.
When I first started Kubitees in elementary school, it was nothing more than another one of my many hobbies/a mini venture for me to make a little spending money. My plan was to hand-design graphic tees and sell them around my neighborhood. This plan of mine was very unconventional; and yes, I was very young, but I still did it anyways. In my mind, I thought that if I had a strong entrepreneurial spirit and a ton of creative ideas (which I did) then that was all I would need for my new hobby to bring in the bank. It wasn’t long before I was proved wrong, but I didn’t call a quits when I realized my venture was failing. Instead, I went back to the drawing board and asked myself one question: Would I continue wasting time with a money venture that wasn’t bringing in any money, or would I change things up and hope that does the trick? Clearly I went with the second option, and I am very glad that I did! I was able to transform Kubitees from a failed venture into a profitable, online store that is smack-dab in the middle of the ever-growing retail e-commerce industry. Simply put, ya girl is excited for what the future holds.
For those of you aspiring entrepreneurs out there, my biggest pieces of advice are to network everywhere you go, and to shamelessly promote yourself/your business. Once you perfect these two tools, they can be immensely beneficial for you–especially when you’re just starting out with your business. But, you can’t perfect these things if you don’t do them often! So with that being said, start a conversation with someone you admire and broadcast your new business on your social media…today! Trust me when I say that, in the end, you will be better off for doing so. Good luck! 🙂
