I attended the 2nd Curls Coils & Cocktails event here in Toronto earlier this month and one of the vendors was Diana Tracy. I was instantly drawn to her table and could not leave without making a purchase! I had the chance to catch up with her and she was gracious enough to share a bit more about her brand.
Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your business?
A: I wanted to purchase a sideways cross bracelet like the ones I’d seen on Kim Kardashian, Whitney Houston and other celebrities but no one in Canada carried it. I decided to buy it online but the shipping to Canada cost as much as the bracelet. So I decided to make it myself. After looking at suppliers online and going to various stores in the GTA I stumbled on a supplier who had everything I needed. I made the bracelet, wore it online and sold it off my wrist. The next week she came back with an order for her sister and friend with a request for one in purple. From then on I had orders rolling in and a business was born.
Q: Why the fashion/accessory business?
A: I’ve always loved fashion and always stayed abreast of whats new and hot. I remember watching Fashion Television as as child and making sketches of ideas I had. It was a morning rite to watch every saturday morning. So when I found myself with a business I did what came natural. I looked towards Europe and the fashion runways and iconic fashion designers to keep up with whats hot 2 seasons down the road. I also did my research and watched celebrity trends so I could stay on top of whats current and keep my eye on whats coming up next.”
Q: Where do you find inspiration for your collections/pieces?
A: Celebrities, runways in Europe, people on the street and my own eclectic style which a lot of times is really outside of the box. I’m not afraid to mix patterns, shapes and sizes. I’ve been doing it for so long and it’s worked so it’s 2nd nature for me.
Q: Do you have any words of wisdom for aspiring entrepreneurs?
A: Follow your heart and not your surroundings. What I mean by that is, in the beginning you might be standing alone in your vision. Your family and friends might not understand you, support you or believe in what you see. Don’t let that discourage you. Keep moving forward with your eyes on your vision. Shut everyone out except your passion. Do your research. Educate yourself on your market and what you need. Figure out your strengths and delegate things that you are not an expert at. Believe me, it’s worth it.
