Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself/background/how you got started with your business?

A: I am a 20-something Black woman who was tired of not seeing her people represented.  Let’s rewind.  I graduated from college in 2013 with a marketing degree and like most graduates, I was just looking for a job before my school loans came back to bite me. While waiting for “the call”, I filled my time with painting.  Overtime, my new hobby turned into more as I realized that all I see in stores and on apparel is white women, namely Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn.  Another realization I came to was how passionate I am about self love, self acceptance, and empowerment within the Black community. So, I decided that I would create uplifting and empowering Black art that represents us in a positive way.

Q: What led you to get into this industry?

A: I am and always have been an artist.  Initially I wanted to be an artist when I grew up, but the world convinced me that artists don’t make money so I took a different path (business school). I really believe that I was called to return to art, because I never intended to create another piece of art post high school, but something told me that I needed to do this.

Q: What is your favourite item available on your website?

A: That’s so hard because I love all of my art! I’ll give you two favorites:

Art: My favorite painting right now is the “Curlfriends (version 2)”.  It represents friendship between Black women and highlights the fact they proudly wear their natural hair.

Tee: My favorite tee is the “Does My Nappyness Offend You?” tee.  This was the inaugural tee!  It was created organically during a fun exchange between my mom and I, so it holds a lot of meaning to me. Not to mention, it’s sassy and an ode to “And Still I Rise” by My Angelou.

Q: Do you have any words of advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?

A: There’s so much advice that can be given, but one big one is: Always remind yourself of and stay true to your purpose.  When you focus on your purpose everything falls into place.

Q: Where can people find you?

A: I am most socially active on Instagram (@byootifuleehueman) and Facebook (

I have two stores:

Etsy: and Teespring:

SN: Byootifulee Hueman is pronounced “Beautifully Human”
