So I recently tried the Baobab & Tea Tree Oils Low-Porosity Protein Free shampoo and conditioner, which are of the latest additions to the Shea Moisture product line. I tried this particular line because for quite some time I had thought I had low porosity hair.

What does porosity mean?

According to Google — “Porosity is the quality of being porous, or full of tiny holes. Liquids go right through things that have porosity. Go back far enough and you’ll find that porosity stems from the Greek word poros for “pore,” which means “passage.”

What is low porosity hair you ask?

According to naturallycurly.com – “Hair with low porosity has a tightly bound cuticle layer with overlapping scales that lay flat…low porosity hair repels moisture when you try to wet it and is hard to process since it resists penetration of chemicals.”

How did I attempt to find out the porosity of my hair? The easiest method that I found was the water in a cup method. The method asks you to take a single strand of hair and a cup (or bowl) of room temperature water. You place the strand of hair on the water and wait to see how the hair reacts. If your hair sinks right away then it is considered high porosity. If your hair sinks but only after a few minutes, or becomes partially submerged then it is considered medium porosity. If your hair floats at the top and either never sinks or takes a long time to sink then it is low porosity. If you have a generous amount of product on your hair then that can sometimes effect the results of this test.

I took the test on two separate occasions and both times my hair floated for quite some time (about 20 minutes). My hair never settled to the bottom of the cup. So I assume that that means my hair is low porosity.

To be honest I don’t have a problem with my current shampoo and conditioner. I use Shea Moisture Superfruit Complex 10-n-1 Shampoo and Tresseme Naturals Conditioner. However, I am open to trying products to improve my hair if possible. I purchased the Baobab & Tea Tree Oils Low-Porosity Protein

Free Shampoo and Baobab & Tea Tree Oils Low-Porosity Protein Free Conditioner. I did not purchase the leave-in detangler because I didn’t need it.

The application: I sectioned my hair into four equal sections and then sprayed my hair with water and fingered detangled my hair. After that process I applied the shampoo to each section. I worked the shampoo through my hair, making sure to focus on my scalp and the roots. Then I rinsed with warm water. I then applied the conditioner to each section, making sure to add a tad more conditioner to my ends. Then I rinsed the conditioner out using cool water. On one other occasion I deep conditioned in between the shampoo and conditioner process.

 

The result: My hair did not feel or look much different then it normally does after shampooing and conditioning. Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect. I was kind of hoping it would make my curls and coils pop more but I didn’t notice much of a difference. My hair did feel clean but that was about it.

 

I wasn’t impressed with this product. It made me doubt the porosity of my hair. I guess there are some other hair properties that could have affected my perception. Like the density of my hair and the width of my hair. At this point figuring out exactly what my hair needs feels like developing an algorithm. I think I will stick with what I feel is currently working for my hair which is the Shea Moisture Superfruit Complex 10-n-1 Shampoo and Tresseme Naturals Conditioner.
